I learned that municipal water tanks last so much longer than domestic water heater tanks because they use Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) rather than sacrificial anode rods. If our water heater had ICCP, I would not have to remove, inspect, and eventually replace the sacrificial anode rod in our expensive Rheem Professional Prestige Hybrid Electric Water heater. I searched for ICCP designed for deomestic water ehaters and found the Water Odor Website. I was impressed by its wealth of information. I became concerned that the constand voltage poer supplies of competing ICCP systems could apply a voltage difference between the anode and tank so large that harmful electrochemical reactions could damage the baked enamel tank coating or so small that tank corrosion would not be prevented. The Water Tank Tec system has an intelligent poer supply that apparently can set the voltage and current based on the tank envioroment, so I ordered one.
After a difficult installation due to the original anode rod being very difficult to remove, the Water Tank Tec system has been working well. Attached is a photo showing the Water Tank Tec system down between the powered anode rod and the tank.
I am recommending the Water Tank Tec system to those concerned about their water heaters rusting out. Water odor is not a probem here. Matt, thanks for making the Water Tank Tec system available and supporting it so well!
